New York Governor Signs Bill Banning Pet Stores From Selling Dogs, Cats or Rabbits

New York lawmakers have placed a ban on the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits in pet stores.

The new law, which was signed by Governor Kathy Hochul last week, is in an attempt to diminish commercial breeding operations often referred to as puppy mills. The law also bans breeders from selling more than nine animals a year.

“This is a very big deal”, says Senator Michael Gianaris. “New York tends to be a big purchaser and profiteer of these mills, and we are trying to cut off the demand at a retail level.”

Report: Plant-Based Chicken Market to Reach $8 Billion Value by 2030

According to a new report by Future Market Insights (FMI), the market for plant-based chicken is expected to register double-digit growth between now and 2030 to reach a value of $8 billion.

According to the report, ggrowing concern for animal welfare is bringing about a paradigm shift in consumer eating habits. In addition, “the initiation of mass level awareness campaigns combined with tough legislations prohibiting or limiting animal slaughter across several countries is primarily fueling growth of the market.”

Furthermore, “consumers are willingly substituting meat products with meat analogues, attributed to rising awareness about the ill-effects of excessive meat consumption on human health.”

Alicia Silverstone Poses Nude for PETA to Promote Vegan Leather and Other Clothing

In a new ad campaign for PETA Alicia Silverstone poses nude in and encourages that people “Don’t Be A Prick” by using animal-based leather and wool.

“I never, ever, get naked in TV, in film, nothing, but I’ve done it for PETA”, says Silverstone, who is encouraging people to use plant-based alternatives to leather.

“There’s this idea that leather is somehow better for the Earth, but what they don’t realize is the amount of resources, water, food, oil for transport, the amount of energy that goes into making leather is extraordinary”, she says.

Nestlé Launches New Animal-Free Milk and Chocolate Milk at Select U.S. Locations

Startup Perfect Day has announced that after months of research and development Nestlé has begun testing its first animal-free milk product, Cowabunga, in select Safeway stores in San Francisco.

The milk is made with Perfect Day’s fermented whey protein, and is the first collaboration between Perfect Day and Nestlé, and comes after Nestlé created the U.S. R+D Accelerator, which it’s using to identify plant-based opportunities and brings them to market at an accelerated rate of six months.

“We are excited to pilot Nestlé’s first animal-free dairy protein-based products through our U.S. R+D Accelerator,” says Joanna Yarbrough, head of R+D Accelerator. “While this category is still very young, we know consumers are looking for products that have a reduced environmental footprint, and we are evaluating this avenue as a future growth opportunity for our business.”

Report: There’s Been a 2,800% Increase in Plant-Based Menu Items Since 2018

Items with a “plant-based” label on restaurant menus has increased by 2,800% in less than five years, according to a new report conducted by the research firm Dataessential.

The report found that “plant-based” is the top growing trend in restaurant menus, seeing a massive increase since 2018. To determine this, Dataessential used a complex algorithm.

“Building an automated and intelligent approach was critical to decoding the complex universe of plant-based trends,” says Datassential’s Chief Data Scientist Alex Langowski. “With the rapid evolution of plant-based items, our customers need insight into current trends as well as the ability to look back into historical data to fully understand the trend.”

Report: Plant Based Snacks Market Worth $40 Billion, Will Double By 2029

A new report by Data Bridge Market Research has found that the plant-based snacks market is worth over $40 billion, but will roughly double within seven years.

UK Burger Kings will begin offering vegan bacon at all of its locations starting January 4th to coincide with Veganuary.

La Vie Foods has announced it has sealed an exclusive partnership with Burger King UK to offer their award-winning vegan bacon across the country starting 4th January. The timing of the release purposefully coincides with Veganuary, which is meant to promote vegan awareness.

The announcement comes after Burger King saw “massive success” offering the vegan bacon at meat-free popups in Bristol and London.

For First Time Air Canada Will Offer Vegan Meals, Snacks and Desserts on Their Menu

Canada’s largest airline Air Canada has announced its first-ever offering of vegan meals, snacks and desserts on their in-flight menu.

The new items will be available to Economy Class passengers traveling within North America or to the Caribbean. Although Air Canada has offered some limited vegan items in the past, it was only by request and not part of the airline’s menu.

Items include a Spiced Chickpea Wrap, which is “A mixture of chickpeas, quinoa, carrots, spinach, tomato, and cilantro served in a whole wheat flatbread.” Another option is Wild Rice Superfood Salad, described as “A wild and brown rice salad filled with edamame, sweet corn, red pepper, dried cranberries, and pumpkin seeds, tossed with a raspberry citrus vinaigrette.”
