For First Time Air Canada Will Offer Vegan Meals, Snacks and Desserts on Their Menu

Canada’s largest airline Air Canada has announced its first-ever offering of vegan meals, snacks and desserts on their in-flight menu.

The new items will be available to Economy Class passengers traveling within North America or to the Caribbean. Although Air Canada has offered some limited vegan items in the past, it was only by request and not part of the airline’s menu.

Items include a Spiced Chickpea Wrap, which is “A mixture of chickpeas, quinoa, carrots, spinach, tomato, and cilantro served in a whole wheat flatbread.” Another option is Wild Rice Superfood Salad, described as “A wild and brown rice salad filled with edamame, sweet corn, red pepper, dried cranberries, and pumpkin seeds, tossed with a raspberry citrus vinaigrette.”

Makers of Plant-Based Lamb Raise $12.3 million to Expand Operations

Food technology startup Black Sheep Foods has raised $12.3 million in a Series A funding round to scale production of plant-based meat alternatives.

The company has raised a total of $18.05 million since its founding in 2019, with this new round of funding being by far their biggest boost yet.

According to a press release, Black Sheep Foods “has developed a proprietary process to reconstruct the flavors of animal meat using plant materials. The team uses patent-pending technology to isolate the flavor molecules of animal meat, identify the same molecules in plants and reconstruct the depth of meat flavor and mouthfeel.”

Study: Vegan Protein Sources Associated with Better Health Outcomes Than Animal-Based Protein

The consumption of vegetable protein sources “is associated with better health outcomes overall (namely, on the cardiovascular system) than animal-based product use”, according to a new study published by the journal Nutrients.

The study, which was also epublished on the National Institute of Health’s website, was conducted by researchers at the University of Padova in Italy. The full text of the study can be found by clicking here.

In this scoping review, researchers “compare animal- and plant-based protein sources in terms of their effects on human health and the environment.” In doing so, they conclude that “the consumption of vegetable protein sources is associated with better health outcomes overall (namely, on the cardiovascular system) than animal-based product use.”

Odd Burger to Open 50 New Locations in the U.S. and Europe

Odd Burger Corporation, one of the world’s first vegan fast-food chains and the first to go public, today announced a plan to develop 50 new Odd Burger restaurant locations in the State of Florida and in the combined territory of GermanySwitzerland and Austria (the region of “DACH”) over a period of 8 years.

In a press release the Odd Burger Corporation that it officially entered into a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Franchise Investment AG and its parent venture capital division, Angelpreneur AG (collectively the “Developers”) to develop the new locations.

The Developers “are a Swiss-based franchise and investment firm with over 25 years of franchise experience and over 40 experts and investors on their team.” The group is led by Farshad Abbaszadeh, who founded German Donar Kebab (GDK) in 2012, which currently operates 100 locations in the UK, EuropeNorth America and the Middle East.

Victoria’s Secret Announces Ban on Animal-Based Cashmere

Apparel company Victoria’s Secret & Co has announced that they have placed a ban on the selling of animal-based cashmere at all of its locations

The ban applies to both Victoria’s Secret locations as well as their PINK stores and PINK-branded products, and it covers all of their worldwide locations in over 60 countries.

“Victoria’s Secret’s decision is a win for the countless gentle goats who will be spared the agonizing ordeal of someone ripping their hair out,” says Tracy Reiman, PETA’s executive vice president said in a statement.  “PETA asks everyone to help goats keep their hair by choosing vegan fabrics, which aren’t produced by condemning animals to a lifetime of suffering.”

Veggie Grill to Open its 35th Restaurant

Veggie Grill, which is America’s largest entirely plant-based fast-casual chain of restaurants, has officially announced the opening of their 35th location and the first to offer all four of their concept restaurants under one roof.

On Wednesday, Dec. 14th Veggie Grill will open their doors at their newest location, located at 1004 Second Ave in New York’s Midtown Manhattan neighborhood. This is Veggie Grills 35th U.S. locations, making it the largest all-vegan fast-casual brand in the country.

IKEA to Launch Plant-Based Food Halls in Three Countries Including U.S.

IKEA’s parent company the Ingka Group has announced the forthcoming launch of their Saluhalla dining concept, which will be at least 80% plant-based.

The food halls are based around traditional Nordic culture that will be meat-free with at least 80% of their menu items being entirely plant-based to start, with the goal of getting that to 100% in the near future. Locations are currently in development in Changsha, China, Gurugram, India and San Francisco, CA.

“We are excited to be unveiling Saluhall, our bold and fresh Nordic take on the food hall concept,” says Jens Nielsen, Ingka Centres’ Commercial and Digital Director. “Our food offering has long been a key element of our meeting places, and with Saluhall we will go beyond dining to inspire the many people with more sustainable food choices, like plant-based dishes.”
