HappyCow, a platform that features over 186,000 vegan-friendly businesses in over 180 countries, has released their list of the top 10 vegan-friendly cities in the world.
HappyCow has revealed their list of the top 10 vegan-friendly cities in the world to coincide with World Vegan Day, which is celebrated on November 1st.
“TeamCow is thrilled to offer the first update to our Top 10 Vegan-Friendly Cities List since pre-pandemic 2019″, says HappyCow. “Amidst a chaotic few years for the vegan restaurant community, we are happy to report an uptick in vegan business growth again as of 2022 – pointing to more promising times ahead.”
HappyCow notes that “Since our last report three years ago, there have been some significant changes in restaurant demographics in key cities, placing new locations on the list while others have fallen back slightly, with some managing to hold their ground. Despite setbacks the community has faced, we are optimistic to see that there are more vegan restaurants and businesses in the world today than ever before.”
To determine the list, HappyCow used took the following into consideration:
- The number of fully vegan restaurants within a 10 km radius of each city centre
- The number of fully vegan businesses in that radius
- The total number of restaurants (vegan, vegetarian, and veg-friendly) listed in the radius
- The density of vegan businesses per capita
- The growth of vegan businesses since the previous report
- A qualitative evaluation from the team, city ambassadors, and the “cowmunity” on finding vegan options and how active the vegan community is
With that in mind, below are the top three vegan-friendly cities in the world, according to HappyCow (you can click here for a detailed breakdown of why each city was chosen):
#1 London
#2 Berlin
#3 New York City
#4 Melbourne
#5 Singapore
#6 Los Angeles
#7 Bangkok
#8 Amsterdam
#9 Warsaw
#10 Barcelona
2019 was the last time HappyCow released their list of the top vegan cities. At the time, Prague, Tel Aviv, Portland and Toronto were on the list, but they have been replaced with Melbourne, Singapre, Amsterdam and Barcelona.
“Since our last report three years ago, there have been some significant changes in restaurant demographics in key cities, placing new locations on the list while others have fallen back slightly, with some managing to hold their ground”, says HappyCow. “Despite the setbacks the community has faced, we are optimistic to see that there are more vegan restaurants and businesses in the world today than ever before”.
This month HappyCow celebrates its 23rd birthday. In 2022 they surpassed 3 million cumulative app downloads with over 900,000 registered members, 1.5 million photo uploads and 1.1 million written reviews.
